Well where do we start, I guess a bit of history....

Back in 2013 there were rumours of a UK version of the American Hot Rod Drags, so when it was announced that a group called V8UK were putting an event together, well it'd be rude not to join in so the idea of entering a 'Team Outlaw Street' was hatched....

‎Over the later part of 2013 plots were hatched, spanners thrown and cars pulled together, we lost a few and gained a few along the way.

The final team was confirmed as:

OS-1 Me + OS-30 Michelle
Running in my GMC pickup 'grizzly'

OS-3 Andy B in his Camaro

OS-4 Ang in her Camaro

OS-18 Vic in his Mustang

OS-31 Nick + OS-52 Tim in Nick's Mustang

OS-35 Tom + OS-32 Gary in Tom's Anglia

OS-38 Arnie + dad Steve in Arnie's Caddy pick-up

OS-44 L‎ee + Ollie in Lee's Caddy pick-up

OS-46 John in his PT Vanster

OS-70 Mark B + Wayne in Marks Anglia

As is always the case the best plans don't always work and 24 hours prior to the start of the OS Power Tour road trip Ang's Camaro was without an a‎xle, Vic's Mustang had wheel bearing issues an Tom's Anglia was in need of mapping on a rolling road.

Tick tock tick tock......
12 hours before the start and disaster, Tom's Anglia destroyed itself on the rolling road, many plans were hatched and a team of helpers were at the ready to do a midnight hour engine swap.

However with time against us a 'substitute' was planned and Gary got ‎ busy spannering on his '69 Firebird to try and make it road trip ready.

D Day.... FRIDAY

10am Friday morning and the first 3 cars of my truck, Gary's Firebird and Mark's Anglia meet at the Lamb and Flag in Welney for a coffee and the start...

An..... we didn't make it out of the car park, with the Firebird refusing to fire, a bit of swearing and spannering later and we're off....

Mark took point with the Anglia due to being the one who'd need fuel the most.... we'd been warned of rain storms, floods and all sorts but the sun was shining an the road trip had begun....

An effortless drive to Birch Hanger services to top up the tanks an yep..... the Firebird wouldn't fire again, after pushing it off the pumps as the garage staff were all getting a tad nervous the fault was traced to pulling the starter shims which solved problems for the rest of the weekend.

We then headed off for Rye, which bar traffic and photo snappers by the Dartford Bridge was a good run, the rain threatened a couple of times but stayed away.

We arrived at the Power Tour camp site which was a youth rugby club in Rye, an we’d already set two Power Tour records:

1st breakdown
1st to arrive

So, 'Team Outlaw Street' base camp was set up and we headed off into Rye for some grub, quickly discovering a fresh fish bar, where cockles, prawns an all manner of sea creature were quickly devoured...

A wander around the historic and picturesque Rye and a spot more lunch then it was time for a beer or three, by the time we'd got back to the camp a few other entrants had started to show up.

Early evening saw Nick and Tim arrive in the Mustang.

We met with Ralph the V8UK Power Tour organiser, checked out the trophies ;-) and had a nose around the other entrants.

John, owner of Rye track an fellow Outlaw member had arranged with the rugby club for a BBQ, entertainment and a bar, although sadly bar the OS members no one took advantage of it, which was a shame seeing all the effort everyone had gone to.

Darkness was upon us and our tents were calling knowing we'd several days of racing and hundreds of miles ahead of us, but not before the OS VW division arrived at midnight, an after some tent building by headlight were set for the night.

Sadly sleep wasn't coming due to a pair of 'grade A's' who decided at close to 1am to do burnouts on the rugby pitch campsite, they were quickly 'educated' by Gary, but the damage was done to the pitch, local goodwill as they'd woken up all the local resident and that they'd also damaged the PT reputation seeing as one of the culprits was also one of the organisers! And to date they’ve still not ‘done right’ with the rugby club by making a donation/apology

In the morning‎ we were woken to rain, rain an more rain... after a hot shower courtesy of the rugby club it was off to a cafe recommended by John for breakfast, the Bosain's Rest was a cracking place which although totally swamped with the PT mob did us all a cracking breakfast.

Rye track was a couple of minute drive away, an John and his crew were busy getting everything set up, sadly the rain was still taking its toll..

But we were greeted at the track by Andy B in his Camaro and John in the PT Vanster‎, Ang sadly couldn't make it due to being unwell, with Andy leaving late evening to drive down, but sadly suffered a fuel leak on route, running out of fuel and running the car on neat meth for a while (don't ask)...

We also received word from Vic that the bearing job was growing in trouble by the minute and was now aiming to meet us on Sunday at Shakey.

This meant Team 'Outlaw Street' consisted of 8 cars and 14 people.

1. My truck (me and Michelle)
2. Camaro (Andy B)
3. PT Vanster (John)
4. Firebird (Gary + Tom)
5. Mustang (Nick + Tim)
6. VW Caddy Pick-up (Lee + Ollie)
7. VW Caddy Pick-up (Arnie + Steve)
8. Ford Anglia (Mark + Wayne)

‎Despite the wet stuff we decided to get a couple of passes in to put on a show for John and the locals that had come to watch and also as the journey from Rye to Shakey is 190 miles and we'd all agreed we wanted to make the bulk of it in daylight.

Due to Rye being a 'sprint track' it takes some getting used to with a LOT more use of the brake pedal than any of us are used to, everyone got a few passes in to get a feel for the track then made a sprinted effort to see what sort of time they could set.

Once we'd all had a 'play' it was decided to make a run for shakey, John deciding to put a few more passes in the Vanster so the 8 became 7 and the 'magnificent seven'...! rolled on out for hopefully sunnier climates....

Mark took point again, but this was shortly lived due to a 'sat nav' cock up seeing him and Gary's Firebird heading off the wrong way an the rest of us following Nick heading off to the nearest Shell garage an right way.

Many phone calls an map reading later we managed to meet up again, only to get stuck in the worst traffic jams since the fuel crisis.... Oh and somehow we even managed to met up with John in the PT Vanster….

The OS convoy of 8 cars performed brilliantly despite six hours of traffic jams, with not one breakdown, Mark's Anglia did venture into the HOT zone a few times and Gary's Firebird decided brakes were a luxury item, but we managed to keep on going.

The jams across the whole route were caused by a number of serious accidents, luckily the OS convoy escaped any major accidents..... or did we.... a certain green Caddy pick-up managed to drive into the back of a certain white GMC pick-up resulting in the caddy bending it's bumper, pushing the bottom valance in, breaking a spotlight, breaking it's intercooler and radiator mounts.....the GMC.... well there's a 5mm x 5mm scuff of green ‎paint on the tow hitch cover, luckily the caddy remained intact and able to make it to shakey.

6 hours later we arrived at shakey to be welcomed by the OS clan who'd done a sterling job of keeping a decent pitch for the cars, base camp and tents.

Before we settled in for an OS evening, we took a collective vote amongst the Team 'OS' drivers and decided 6 to 2 to withdraw from the PT and remain at Shakey‎.

Much beer, frivolity and banter ensued for the evening, in-between repairing the Caddy Pick-up and utilising the Anglia as a take-away delivery car......

'If Carlsberg made fast take-away delivery ‎vehicles'..

SUNDAY

We were greeted for the 2nd morning on the trot with rain on the tents, luckily this drizzle soon passed and the track staff got the track up and running, as this was Gary's Picnic weekend Shakey was proper busy with the fire-up queues stretching back around the pits all day.

Despite the occasional shower the track staff worked relentlessly to keep going resulting in a number of us gaining new PB's (me included) ;-) Although sadly Vic’s issues had spread further and he came up to support minus the warhorse.

By mid afternoon the realisation hit that Marks Anglia was the quickest V8 on the Power Tour thus far and held a good chance of winning a trophy, discussion were had, coins were tossed and it was decided that the Anglia and Firebird would make the run to York.

Goodbyes were said and they headed out, John was heading home for the night for a warm bed and hot dinner an planned to run over to York in the morning to support the lads.

Nick and Tim headed for home to get the drag radials and trailer for the Mustang so they could race at Shakey on the Monday, Andy B also headed for home as he'd decided to step back from the Power Tour.

Leaving us, Arnie, Lee, Steve and Ollie with all the Outlaw family for another night of banter an beer......or so we thought.....

At around 8pm Lee started the 'I might be the second quickest 4-6 cylinder car' discussion, much cursing was had by Steve an Arnie who'd decided to stay put but knew if Lee went they would 'have' to go to support their fellow OS VW racer....

The debates were heated, the research involving weather maps, PT entry lists, and insider intel later, it was decided they'd leave at 5am to make the drive to York.

Under threat of death (and far worse) from those remaining if they woke anyone up the gang had a cracking night and turned in.

Lee's main competition was Hot Rod Drags legend and all round nice bloke Mick Wilkes and his van 'bluebell' ‎and although quicker than Lee, it is drag racing and Lee pinned his hopes on the drag race gods being on his side...

MONDAY

I didn't make the York run, but can tell you that Lee, Arnie, Ollie and Steve left at 5.30am yep they woke everyone up and when they were an hour away from York I called them to let em know Mick had confirmed on FB that he WAS going to be at York (really wouldn't of wanted to have been Lee when Arnie and Steve found out)....

Gary decided to enter the Firebird into the burnout competition and went on to win it....

Mark B ran well at York and secured himself the Fastest V8 Trophy...

Lee was piped to the win by Mick, who secured the Fastest V6/4 Cylinder win....

Everyone made it home from York and Shakey in one piece, no one (bar Nick, but it is a Mustang) needed to be trailered home and to boot the lads won a few more pots for the collection.

You omitted the part about it being bloody good fun as well Mark. We had a blast and fell in love with York raceway. I can't understand all the bad mouthing it got from other racers before leaving Shakey.
